Large Pores

What Are Large Pores?

Everyone has pores on their face, but some are more visible than others. Each pore contains a hair follicle, and glands that allow sweat and sebum (oil) to escape from the body. Depending on skin type, genetics and environmental factors, pore size can vary and become more visible if they become congested, leading to acne or blackheads. Pores can also become more noticeable as we age due to loss of skin elasticity over time.

Symptoms

  • Visible Depressions in the Skin – large pores appear as small, depressed dots on the skin, mostly visible in the ‘T’ zone on the forehead, nose and around the nose, and chin.
  • Congestion – Enlarged or congested pores can become more visible if clogged with oil (sebaceous filaments) and are sometimes mistaken for blackheads.
  • Texture – Enlarged pores can give the skin an ‘orange peel’ like texture
  • Oily Skin – Pores are more noticeable in oily skin types.
  • Age and Sun Damage – Pores can become more apparent with age and sun damage.
  • Environmental Factors – Pores may appear larger during hot and humid weather or certain times of the menstrual cycle.
  • Dilated Pores of Winer – These are essentially large, solitary open comedones (blackheads) that can appear anywhere on the face or body. They are typically larger than regular blackheads and can be more noticeable.

Causes

  • Genetics – Pore size and sebum production are largely determined by genetics.
  • Sun Damage – Exposure to the sun can break down collagen and elastin, damaging skin elasticity.
  • Ageing – As we age, skin loses elasticity, and pores can appear larger.
  • Diet and Lifestyle -Smoking and poor diet can contribute to more visible pores.
  • Congestion – A build-up of skin cells and bacteria within the pores can increase their visibility and lead to pimples, pustules, or blackheads.

Recommended Treatments For Large Pores

Pore size is genetically determined, so while we cannot shrink them, we can minimise their appearance and prevent them from appearing larger.
