Cheek Rejuvenation: Concerns

What Is Cheek Rejuvenation?

Flat, soft or sunken cheeks, whether as a result of ageing or natural bone structure, can contribute to an appearance of tiredness or hollowness and can lead to a prematurely aged look. Over time, the loss of facial volume and changes in skin elasticity may lead to flattened contours, affecting the overall harmony and youthful appearance of the face.

Symptoms of flat or sunken cheeks

A lack of volume in the cheeks can lead to a flat or sunken look in the mid-face region, a loss of definition around the cheekbones, and contributes to a tired or drawn appearance. This volume loss can also lead to a heaviness in the nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines), and can contribute to a ‘sagging’ in the jowl area and also a hollowed appearance in the under eye area.

Causes

Several factors contribute to the development of flat or sunken cheeks. Genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors play a role in the natural structure of the face, influencing the prominence of the cheekbones.

As we age, we lose around 1% of our natural collagen stores every year, which decreases the firmness and structure of the skin. We tend to notice this volume loss first in the mid face area, which tends to soften and flatten the cheeks, causing them to sag and leading to a sunken and aged appearance. This sagging can also contribute to hollowness under the eyes and create a tear trough; deepens the nasolabial folds and can also create a heavy and loose appearance of the skin around the lower face and jawline.

Treatments

At SkinHD, we offer a number of treatments that can help to revitalise the cheeks, restoring volume and rejuvenating the mid face area.

Dermal Fillers – Hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers are a popular choice for instant cheek rejuvenation. These fillers are administered by medical professionals, and expertly add volume to the targeted area, lifting and revitalising the apples of the cheeks and cheekbones. The procedure is minimally invasive, and results can last up to 12 months depending on product used.

Profhilo, Sunekos, Redensity 1, Sculptra –
Unlike traditional fillers, skin booster treatments use a bio-remodelling approach using high concentrations of hyaluronic acid, amino acids and other ingredients to stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin. This improves the structure of the skin over time, providing a natural looking lift and restoring volume. They offer subtle, yet effective and natural looking results that improves the overall volume, health and youthful appearance of the cheek area. Typically a course of 2-3 treatments are required for best results.

HArmonyCA – HarmonyCA offers dual benefits of both a dermal filler for an immediate volume boost, and a skin booster to stimulate the long-term production of collagen and elastin that promotes sustained skin rejuvenation. With just one treatment, results are an immediate and strong volumising effect for the cheeks, improved skin laxity, and smoother and healthier skin that lasts for up to 24 months.

Microneedling – By creating a controlled micro-injury to the skin, it forces the skin to go into ‘healing mode’, which stimulates the natural production of collagen and elastin to help improve the appearance of fine lines and a subtle improvement in volume to the mid face area. We tend to treat the whole face when microneedling, so good for those looking for a slight volume boost for a larger area. A course of 4-6 treatments is recommended for optimal results.

Chemical Peels – Although chemical peels won’t dramatically increase the volume in the cheek area, a course of resurfacing treatments can help improve the skin quality in the mid face area and can also help to stimulate the natural production of collagen for improved skin structure. Chemical peels will also improve the overall tone and texture of the skin, which helps to restore a youthful radiance and glow.

Skincare – Using active ingredients such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides and retinoids can help hydrate the skin, boost collagen production and increase cellular turnover to maintain healthy and plumped skin. Some medical grade skincare, such as tretinoin, are most effective but require a prescription, so a consultation with one of our medical prescribers is essential to ascertain suitability.
