Jowls
The layers of our faces alter in a number of ways as we get older. When these two come together, the bottom portion of the face droops and is characterised by jowls. This is a typical indication of ageing in both men and women.
Causes of jowls
There are several factors that contribute to jowls. As we become older
- As we age, our skeletal structure gradually weakens. The jaw therefore gets thinner and smaller. Additionally, the cheekbones narrow and grow flatter.
- The deep tissues, or SMAS, lose collagen, causing the higher tissues to droop.
- Since the fat pockets in the centre of our faces shrink, there is also a loss of essential volume in our faces.
- The loss of collagen and elastin also causes the skin to become looser and thinner.
When these elements come together, the face begins to droop, which causes wrinkles and jowls to appear in the lower face.
