Milia
What Are Milia?
Milia are small, raised white bumps that are typically white or yellow in colour and look like whiteheads but cannot be popped. Commonly found around the eyes and cheeks, they can also appear anywhere on the body. While not harmful, milia can be a cosmetic concern for many.
Symptoms
- Appearance – Small, firm bumps that are white or yellow in colour
- Touch – Firm to the touch, unlike pimples which are usually softer
- Location – Most commonly found around the cheeks and eyes but can appear anywhere on the body
- Lack of inflammation – Unlike spots, milia are not inflamed or red
- Persistence – They don’t tend to be painful and are usually not harmful
- Resolution – Milia sometimes resolve on their own after a few months but can be professionally removed if desired
- Risks of self-removal – Attempting to remove milia on your own can lead to infection or scarring
Causes
- Keratin Build-Up – Milia are caused by a build-up of keratin, a naturally occurring protein in the skin, which becomes trapped under the skin and forms a hard, white lump.
- Age-Related Factors – Aw we age, cell turnover slows, leading to the accumulation of dead skin cells and the formation of milia.
- Comedogenic Products – Using thick, oil-based products can be comedogenic, meaning they can clog pores and contribute to the formation of milia.
- Poor Cleansing – Ineffective removal of make-up or not cleansing the skin thoroughly can increase the likelihood of milia.
- Skin Trauma – Trauma to the skin, such as burns or rashes, can also lead to milia formation.
Recommended Treatments For Milia
While milia can sometimes resolve on their own, professional treatments can help speed up the removal process and prevent recurrence.
